CL, NCT 127, ITZY, Mamamoo: Our favorite K-pop songs of September 2021

By Hannah Mallorca Published Oct 06, 2021 8:21 pm

September 2021 is over, and the month produced a handful of timeless bops. It wasn’t as jampacked as the previous months but surprisingly, it’s a welcome change of pace.

K-pop stans witnessed the explosive comebacks of NCT 127 and ITZY, with title tracks that are different from their usual discography. Second-generation stars Key and CL also released new music, showing the younger stars how it’s supposed to be done.

So, in no particular order, these songs are my top picks for September. Disclaimer: this list features songs sung by K-pop artists, so you might find two English tracks.

Love Is by ITZY

It’s refreshing for this girl group to release a love song since their tracks usually talk about girl power and self-love. But in true ITZY fashion, Love Is is an empowering track since it talks about “loving somebody” when you’re ready.

My Universe by BTS and Coldplay

BTS and Coldplay seem like an unlikely collaboration, but My Universe showed they’re a match made in heaven (musically). The track is an uplifting bop for fans, which we think it’s what they’re going for. It’s also a seamless marriage between both groups without sacrificing their individual charms.

Dimples by The Rose’s Woosung

For fans who are curious about The Rose, Dimples by Woosung is a good way to get into the group. It feels like a callback to 80s rock-and-roll, with the synth-wave beats on the background, which suits him to the tee. Fun fact: this track has been three years in the making.

Mumumumuch by Mamamoo

As a Moomoo, I’m overjoyed when Mamamoo revealed they’ll be releasing new music. And they didn’t disappoint. As usual. This retro-inspired track is more relaxed than their previous releases, but it features the signature vocal abilities fans love about the group.

Helium by SHINee’s KEY

SHINee has always released songs that are out of the box. Key is no exception. His comeback was a treat as it featured tracks that are weird, experimental, and so Key. Helium, though, is my favorite from his mini-album since it showed off his ability to play around with notes. And it’s so satisfying to listen to.

Focus by NCT 127

Was NCT 127 playing tricks with my heart with this track? Focus is sexy and playful, it almost feels like the boy group was trying to lure fans into their spell with their voices. This R&B track is probably my favorite track of the group so far, and I’m looking forward to hearing songs like this in the future.

Lover Like Me by CL

The K-pop’s second-generation fan in me was overjoyed when this song was released. Even if this song is a glimpse into CL’s upcoming album, it’s an exciting reminder to fans why she’s considered as one of the industry’s aces.

Eternal Sunshine by ATEEZ

Eternal Sunshine by ATEEZ is the quintessential feel-good K-pop track of the month. Even if the boy group is known for their powerful and mythical concepts, this song is refreshing to hear from them. It’s no wonder why they’re one of the groups to watch out for.

Savior by Lee Hi feat. B.I.

Since her debut, Lee Hi never disappoints with her music. Savior is no different. The mellow indie track is both heartbreaking and beautiful, as it talks about falling in love with a “savior that has come to ruin me.” Plus, it features former iKON member B.I. as well.

PING PONG by Hyuna & Dawn

A song produced by K-pop’s, arguably, most fearless couple? Yes, please. Hyuna and Dawn proved why they’re a perfect match with the moombahton trap-inspired Ping Pong. This song is fun, playful, sexy, and campy. At the same time, it makes you want to get up and dance.
