Kuroko’s Basketball anime coming to Netflix on Jan. 15
If you’re a sports lover who fancies basketball-themed anime like Slam Dunk, there’s good news for you.
Netflix has recently announced on Twitter that it will stream the first season of Kuroko's Basketball (Kuroko no Basket) on January 15. Created by Tadatoshi Fujimaki, Kuroko's Basketball follows the story of two freshmen players and their underdog squad battling the powerhouses of Japanese high school basketball.
Here’s the synopsis:
At Seirin High School, two newly recruited freshmen prove that they are not ordinary basketball players: Taiga Kagami, a promising player returning from the US, and Tetsuya Kuroko, a seemingly ordinary student whose lack of presence allows him to move around unnoticed. Although Kuroko is neither athletic nor able to score any points, he was a member of Teikou's basketball team, where he played as the "Phantom Sixth Man," who easily passed the ball and assisted his teammates. Kuroko no Basket follows the journey of Seirin's players as they attempt to become the best Japanese high school team by winning the Inter High Championship. To reach their goal, they have to cross pathways with several powerful teams, some of which have one of the five players with godlike abilities, whom Kuroko and Taiga make a pact to defeat.
The first season of Kuroko's Basketball anime aired from April to September 2012, the second ran from October 2013 to March 2014, while the third aired from January to June 2015. Anime streaming service Crunchyroll streamed all three seasons outside of Japan as they aired.
As for the manga, 30 volumes were serialized in Shueisha's Weekly Shonen Jump magazine from 2008 to 2014, while English versions was published by Viz Media. In the big screen, the Gekijōban Kuroko no Basuke Last Game movie opened in Japan back in March 2017. Meanwhile, a Kuroko's Basketball stage play ran for in Tokyo and Osaka from 2016 to 2019.
