Netflix gives first look at 'Pacific Rim' anime

Two years ago, Netflix announced the production of a Pacific Rim animated series. Now, the streaming giant has officially taken the wraps off the project to give fans a first glimpse and official title of the animated series based on the 2013 film about giant robots battling humongous Earth-shattering monsters.

A recent tweet posted by the Netflix official account reveals two striking photos for the animated series officially titled Pacific Rim: The Black. The post also confirmed a 2021 release.

The caption reads, "Long ago, humanity defeated the Kaiju. Now, they’re evacuating Australia. In 2021, join a pair of siblings and their battered, long-abandoned Jaegar as they battle across a continent of danger in Pacific Rim: The Black. @Legendary @POLYGONPICTURES."

Story-wise, the series appears to be set long after the defeat of the kaiju from the 2013 film. Judging by the photos, it's possible that the anime delves on the timeline between the original Pacific Rim and the 2018 sequel Pacific Rim: Uprising.

Two pilots still share the controls at the jaeger, and both are connected to the robot itself via a harness strapped to their backs. Meanwhile, it’s difficult to determine what kind of kaiju the siblings are battling so we’re left to wonder until a full trailer comes out.

Tokyo-based animation company Polygon Pictures co-produced the series, which has already been confirmed for two seasons at Netflix. Aside from the release date, no other details were revealed by the streamer, leaving fans to wonder how many episodes will be there for the pilot season.

Based on Legendary's hit franchise, the upcoming Pacific Rim: The Black anime breathes new life into the series. It officially arrives on Netflix in 2021.
