iPhone 17 or iPhone 18 Pro line: Which one suits you better?
New iPhone alert!
Apple just introduced the new iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max on Thursday, Sept. 10. According to the tech giant, the new models deliver "the most advanced pro camera system in an iPhone, and huge leaps in battery life and performance."
As is customary for Apple, soon after the announcement, the tech giant discontinued its iPhone 17 Pro line. But the standard iPhone 17 is still on the market.
Now it begs the question: Will this new line of iPhones be better suited for your needs?
Camera
The selling point of the iPhone 18 Pro line is the camera system. It has a new 48MP Fusion Main camera with variable aperture. Per Apple, this is the "most advanced camera" it has ever made. Users can play with the new Pro controls to customize their experience with the Camera app.
There are six laser-cut blades that make the transition between different apertures smooth, automatically adjusting according to depth of field and available lighting.
It works well with low light and produces sharper background detail.
To recall, the iPhone 17 has an 18MP Center Stage front camera whose square sensor enables zoom and rotate options, aside from a 48MP Fusion Main camera with a 2x optical-quality telephoto, and a 48MP Fusion Ultra Wide camera.
However, the iPhone 18 Pro has the edge when it comes to a customizable shooting experience, as it has new Pro Controls, which let users manually adjust the aperture, shutter speed, white balance, and even exposure with a histogram.
The new iPhone also has the upper hand video-wise, as it can shoot up to 4K at 120fps vs the iPhone 17's 4K at 60fps.
Battery
Apple's press release described the iPhone 18 Pro Max as having "the largest increase in battery life ever on iPhone," touting 43 hours of video playback. It takes around 15 minutes for the iPhone 18 Pro to charge up to 50%; wirelessly, it may take 30 minutes.
Meanwhile, the iPhone 17 has a 30-hour battery life. It can charge up to 50% with just 20 minutes of charging.
Appearance
The iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max come in four finishes: Black, Silver, Glacier, and, for the first time, Burgundy.
In terms of screen size, the iPhone 18 Pro has a 6.3-inch Super Retina XDR OLED display; the Pro Max upgrades to 6.9 inches with ultra-thin contoured bezels. These screens are protected front and back by Ceramic Shield 2.
Both are quite light, too. The iPhone 18 Pro weighs 211 grams, about as heavy as an empty coffee cup; the Pro Max dips the scale at 249 grams, like a half-full coffee cup.
These models also come with a smaller Dynamic Island, found at the top of the screen, that can show three live activities at once; one more than in iPhone 17.
The iPhone 17 comes in Mist Blue, Sage, Lavender, Black, and White. It is also made scratch-resistant with Ceramic Shield 2 with a 6.3-inch Super Retina XDR OLED display. Borders are minimized so this display can be maximized.
It's lighter than the iPhone 18 Pro line, coming in at 177 grams, or about as heavy as a small avocado.
Special features
The iPhone 18 Pro models are powered by the A20 Pro, which has 50% more memory bandwidth than the iPhone 17's A19 chip.
Apple's newest line also comes with Apple Reference Image, which is powered by the sensor in the main camera. In Reference mode, the camera securely signs the raw image data so Cloud servers can create a permanent, tamper-proof original photo.
In the Photos app, you can view the original image alongside reference images to check if any edits were made.
iPhone 17 runs on an A19 chip whose main capabilities include 3-Nanometer architecture, a 6-core CPU configuration, and a 5-core GPU architecture perfect for mobile gaming and graphics-intensive apps.
Both iPhone 18 Pro models include 12GB of RAM and storage capacities ranging from 256GB to 2TB. In comparison, the iPhone 17 is equipped with 8GB of RAM, with storage space from 256 GB to 512 GB
Verdict
At the end of the day, whichever iPhone is fit for you depends on your budget and use case. The iPhone 17 is still pretty capable as a daily driver and still supports Apple Intelligence features. It will also get iOS 27, which introduces a smarter Siri and AI photo editing tools, among others.
If you're looking for a device with better cameras, the iPhone 18 Pro will fit the bill, as the variable aperture lens is its highlight feature. However, you have to be ready to shell out more than usual. Even compared to last year's iPhone 17 Pro, the iPhone 18 Pro got a big price hike.
The iPhone 18 Pro starts at P94,990; the iPhone 18 Pro Max starts at P99,990.
The more wallet-friendly option is the iPhone 17, which, at launch in 2025, was available for P57,990. Currently, Apple's website lists the 1-year-old phone at P69,990 for the 256GB version.
