In this documentary, the controversial former First Lady of the Philippines Imelda Marcos tells her own story—from her beauty queen days, her marriage with former president and dictator Ferdinand Marcos, to the court battles she faced for graft and corruption.
She also discussed her husband's regime in the film, denying the atrocities that happened under martial law, as well as how she brought 3,000 pairs of shoes with her when the Marcoses went into exile.
Aside from the late dictator's wife, Diaz got to sit down with their children, Sen. Imee and presidential aspirant Ferdinand Jr. or Bongbong.
Imelda had its world premiere at the International Documentary Film Festival in Amsterdam in 2003 and was screened at the 2004 Sundance Film Festival where it bagged an award for Excellence in Cinematography - Documentary.
Marcos had the film temporarily banned from Philippine cinemas but it was eventually released, earning more than Spider-Man 2. Watch the theatrical version of the movie here.
Diaz's 2020 documentary exploring the conflicts between the press and the government under President Rodrigo Duterte, A Thousand Cuts, was also screened at Sundance.
This year, two more Filipinos bagged awards at the Sundance Film Festival, including Martika Ramirez Escobar for Leonor Will Never Die and Don Josephus Raphael Eblahan for The Headhunter's Daughter.
