Something sinister awaits gamers in Resident Evil Village’s 2nd trailer

When the most recent PlayStation 5 showcase event released, not only was the price and launch date of the next-gen game console unveiled, the presentation also came with a rather creepy surprise in the form of Resident Evil Village’s second trailer.

While the first teaser released back in June gave scant clues, the second trailer left little to the imagination.

In a three-minute trailer released by the official PlayStation YouTube channel, more details emerged regarding the new chapter of the survival horror game.

The game takes place years after the events of 2017’s Resident Evil 7. Ethan Winters and his wife Mia are now living peacefully in a new location, away from the nightmares of the Dulvey incident. But when Chris Redfield, the legendary hero of the Resident Evil series is re-acquainted with the couple, an unforeseen tragedy befalls them once again. Seeking answers, a distraught Ethan finds himself in a remote snow-capped village, but instead of closure, he finds an entirely new nightmare.

Gameplay-wise, the trailer is reminiscent of its predecessor, utilizing a first-person perspective with a creepy atmosphere accentuated by barely-lit environments. It also takes inspiration from the storyline of 2005’s Resident Evil 4, where the story takes place in a village setting and the enemies are members of a mysterious cult. Yet, beastly enemies are also present, like the weapon-wielding zombies or the hairy werewolves spotted in the last few clips.

Owing to the remote village as the chosen location, its quite possible that the zombies here may be the product of a different virus or parasite. Questions like: Is the Umbrella Corporation or rival “The Organization'' behind all this? What is Chris doing? Why is there a Code Veronica-ish mansion in the middle of nowhere? are bound to keep us guessing until we get other clues or more details.

Resident Evil Village is set to be released “sometime in 2021” for the PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X. There's still no word of it coming to PS4 or Xbox One, so for now, it’s a next-gen only release.
