Weekend Watchlist: November Nostalgia
Traditional Christmas films and Holiday classics are starting to creep up on streaming sites. But if you’re the type who prefers horror movies to sappy romances, there’s still a lot of thrilling action-adventure and horror flicks to catch up to for a Halloween hangover movie night.
Travel back to the past this November with animated series set in ancient Greece, dive into peculiar loops back in time, immerse yourself in the mafia world of the '70s, bond with a transforming VW Beetle in the '80s, or relive small town teen angst drama in the late '90s.
Here are a few nostalgia-inducing series and films, and some new offerings currently available on streaming sites to watch this weekend.
Netflix
Bumblebee
Synopsis: Fleeing from the Decepticons in 1987, Bumblebee hides out on Earth. But after he befriends a sad teen, the battered Beetle's foes are hot on his trail. This 2018 American science fiction action film is the sixth (and considered the best) installment of the live-action Transformers film series. The film stars Hailee Steinfield, Dylan O’Brien, and John Cena.
Dawson's Creek, Seasons 1 to 6
Synopsis: Two childhood best friends, Dawson and Joey, go through different stages of adolescence together. Their friendship is later tested when they both start a relationship with different people. This classic American teen drama television series starring James Van Der Beek, Katie Holmes, Joshua Jackson, and Michelle Williams ran from 1998 to 2003. All six seasons are now available on Netflix.
Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children
Synopsis: Inspired by his grandfather's old photographs, a teenager unravels the mystery of a remote orphanage that's a refuge for children with odd abilities stuck in a loop in time in 1943. The 2016 fantasy film directed by Tim Burton is based on the 2011 novel of the same name by Ransom Riggs. The film’s cast includes Eva Green, Asa Butterfield, Judi Dench, and Samuel L. Jackson.
Love & Anarchy
Synopsis: When Sofie, a career driven consultant and married mother of two, gets an assignment to modernize an old publishing house she meets young IT technician Max, and an unexpected flirtatious game begins. Sofie and Max secretly challenge each other to do things that question societal norms. It starts innocently enough, but as the game gets more and more daring the consequences grow beyond proportions.
Blood of Zeus
Synospsis: Set in the world of Greek mythology, the series revolves Heron, a commoner living in ancient Greece who discovers his true heritage as the demigod son of Zeus, and his purpose: to save Olympus and Earth from a demonic army.
The Godfather I, II & III
Synopsis: The Godfather Trilogy is an American film series released in 1972, 1974, and 1990 that consists of three crime films directed by Francis Ford Coppolo inspired by the 1969 novel of the same name by Italian American author Mario Puzo. The films follow the trials of the Italian American mafia Corleone family, whose patriarch, Vito Corleone (Marlon Brando), rises to be a major figure in American organized crime. His youngest son, MIchael Corleone (Al Pacino), becomes his successor.
Alone/Together
Synopsis: Eight years after their breakup, college sweethearts Christine and Raf reconnect at different points in their lives as feelings from the past resurface. The 2019 Philippine romantic drama written and directed by Antoinette Jadaone stars Liza Soberano and Enrique Gil.
HBO GO
The Dead Don’t Die
Synopsis: In the sleepy small town of Centerville, the dead rise from their graves and savagely attack and feast on the living – and the citizens must battle for their survival. The 2019 zombie horror comedy film features an ensemble cast including Bill Murray, Adam Driver, Chloë Sevigny, Steve Buscemi, Tilda Swinton, and Selena Gomez.
Spider in the Web
Synopsis: A young operative is summoned to keep an eye on a veteran spy whose motives and behaviour has become doubtful to the agency. The 2019 spy thriller stars Ben Kingsley, Monica Belluci, Itzik Cohen and Itay Tiran.
