Mads Mikkelsen joins 'Indiana Jones 5'
Danish actor Mads Mikkelsen will reportedly join the cast of the next Indiana Jones movie.
According to Deadline, Mikkelsen has been cast in the fifth Indiana Jones film and will star alongside Harrison Ford and Fleabag actress Phoebe Waller-Bridge.
It’s still unknown what role Mikkelsen will be playing in the upcoming movie as plot details have yet to be revealed. The film is reportedly targeting to begin production this summer with director James Mangold.
The Ford vs Ferrari and Logan director will take over the filmmaking reins from Steven Spielberg, who helmed the first four Indiana Jones films. Spielberg is still expected to serve as a producer along with Kathleen Kennedy, Frank Marshall and Simon Emanuel, while John Williams will also return to compose the score.
Mikkelsen, whose previous credits include Marvel’s Doctor Strange, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, Casino Royale, and Hideo Kojima’s Death Stranding, is also replacing Johnny Depp as dark wizard Gellert Grindelwald in the upcoming Fantastic Beasts 3.
Meanwhile, Lucasfilm earlier confirmed that the 78-year-old Ford will reprise his role as Dr. Henry Jones in the next Disney tentpole.
Ford first appeared as Indy in 1981’s Raiders of the Lost Ark following his stint as Han Solo in the first two films of the original Star Wars trilogy. He then later appeared in the 1984 prequel Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom and in 1989’s Indiana Jones and the last Crusade.
After almost two decades, Ford returned to play his iconic role in the fourth installment of the franchise, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.
The fifth installment in the franchise was first announced in 2016 and was scheduled to hit theaters in 2019. However, the film was delayed after Spielberg departed the project over creative differences with the film’s producers and screenwriters.
The next Indiana Jones movie is now slated to be released in theaters on July 29, 2022.
