PANaHON: PAGASA launches new app for weather updates
Rain or shine, there's a new way to keep tabs on the weather.
The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration has launched a new mobile app aimed at making weather updates, forecasts, and hazard information more accessible to Filipinos.
In a press release, the weather bureau highlighted that as part of its commitment to modernizing weather and climate services, they have built a digital platform dubbed "PANaHON" that's designed to provide "greater accessibility to hydrometeorological information and observing network data."
"As the Philippines remains among the world's most vulnerable prone countries, DOST-PAGASA emphasizes that preparedness is a shared responsibility among government agencies, local communities, institutions, and individual citizens," they said.
"The agency is committed to [continuing] to fulfill its mandate and advance its mission of protecting lives, livelihoods, and properties through public awareness initiatives, timely weather and climate advisories, and innovative digital tools," they added.
The main feature of the app is its interactive map, which provides a comprehensive, color-coded radar overview of the country, tracking real-time precipitation levels measured in millimeters per hour.
A color key on the right side helps users easily interpret storm density, ranging from light showers at 0.3 mm to torrential downpours exceeding 80 mm.
There's also a slider at the bottom where you can scroll through the days of the week to anticipate incoming weather.

The Locations tab, meanwhile, allows you to search specific cities and areas that are of interest to you. For instance, searching for an area like San Juan, Taytay in Rizal instantly pulls up a clean breakdown of current conditions.
This includes the real-time temperature, general sky conditions like partly cloudy skies with rain showers and thunderstorms, current rainfall in millimeters, and the specific heat index category.
Scrolling down reveals an hourly forecast that gives users a glimpse of what to expect over the next few hours.
For those trying to plan out the rest of their work week, the app also features a handy five-day forecast that lays out the daily projected rain volume to help everyone adjust their plans.

According to PAGASA, PANaHON integrates data from the agency's nationwide network of Automatic Weather Stations and Synoptic Stations, ensuring comprehensive and localized weather monitoring.
The app is available to download on the Google Play Store and the App Store.
