Marvel Comics to launch new ‘Iron Fist’ series in 2022
Marvel Comics has announced that a brand new hero will be taking up the Iron Fist mantle next year.
The company revealed last Friday that a five-issue limited series featuring The Living Weapon will launch in 2022 and will see the legendary mantle of the Iron Fist passed on to a new hero.
The upcoming series, which is slated to begin in Feb. 16, will be written by Alyssa Wong (Star Wars: Doctor Alpha) and sketched by Michael YG. Artist Jim Cheung, on the other hand, is handling the limited-series' covers and the new hero's costume design.
“It’s an incredible honor to introduce a new Iron Fist to the Marvel Universe," Wong said. "I’m excited to delve into the comic’s rich mythos and build on it. What does it mean for someone to take up the mantle of the Iron Fist right now, today? As a newcomer, how does one interact with legacy, and how does one honor it while forging a new path?"
Wong added: “I’m so stoked to work with artist Michael YG, colorist Jay Ramos, and the rest of the incredible team on this book. And writing this character, who views things through fresh eyes, feels very special to me.”
Marvel Comics said that fans can expect an "epic hero’s journey in true Marvel fashion," teasing that the mysterious character will unlock "long-hidden secrets behind the history of his ancient powers" to confront a threat only he can defeat.
Meanwhile, the new hero's identity is still being kept under wraps by Marvel Comics as of this writing. The company, however, did show the cover art from the upcoming limited-series' first issue. Take a look below:

The new series will follow the conclusion of Iron Fist: Heart of the Dragon, which saw Danny Rand, giving up his power to save the world. Marvel Comics describes the new series as "a revolutionary transformation of one of Marvel’s most fascinating mystical mythologies." The company also teased that the powers of the new hero may not come from the Dragon of K’un-Lun.
“The first issue is a dynamic, action-packed, eerie and… if I do say, charming comic,” Editor Mark Paniccia said. “You’ll get the origin of this new Iron Fist but there are many cool mysteries that’ll unravel over the course of the series. Things even the most ardent Marvel fan would never expect!”
Meanwhile, it's also unclear how the new champion will affect Netflix's live-action adaptation of Iron Fist, which starred Finn Jones. The series, which drew criticisms for casting a Caucasian person instead of an Asian actor, has been cancelled by the streaming service after two seasons.
"It's horrible. It's like the death of a friend or a close family member," Jones earlier told Collider. "You’ve spent years building this other world within yourself and sharing this other person with the whole world. Usually, with films or plays, you get to see that arc through. There’s a journey. But with Iron Fist, it was like we just got to the peak. We were just getting there. We’d just turned the show around. We had just done so much great work, really getting the train back on the tracks. And then, within three weeks of it being released, all of [the Marvel Netflix shows] were wiped out. It was sad. It was stunted. It felt like the losing a dear friend. It’s just a shame. There’s not much else I can say."
