New colors for PS5’s DualSense controller finally out

Cosmic Red or Midnight Black? The two new colors for the PlayStation 5 DualSense controller are out now in stores.

Since the launch of PS5, only one standard color scheme—black and white, has been available. Now, fans of the console can choose from two new additions.

With a “cosmic” and galaxy-inspired design, both pay homage to how humans view the vast unknown of outer space. Midnight Black, according to Sony, features two subtle shades of black with light gray details that mirrors how people see space at night. On the other hand, Cosmic Red is a mixture of a striking red and a black shade inspired by the distinctive red colors found in the cosmos.

“Both Midnight Black and Cosmic Red feature a subtle blue hue that produces unique shades of red and black. A blue hue is also present in the original DualSense wireless controller colors, so all three colors complement each other nicely,” one of the design team, Satoshi Aoyagi explained.

The goal was to find designs that will both surprise and entice fans, Leo Cardoso, another member of the design team, added.

“These new colors are the result of an extensive selection process. We wanted the new controller colors to complement each other, as well as the original DualSense wireless controller and PS5 console, so we designed the colors around the theme of ‘galaxy’ as it felt like a natural progression from the original PS5 and accessories designs,” Cardoso said on PlayStation Blog.

Before the release of Midnight Black and Cosmic Red, PS5 and DualSense controllers received an update to improve performance and stability. The latest version 21.01-03.20.00 is now available for download.

However, some fans have yet to purchase a PS5 due to limited stocks. According to Sony, shortages are expected to continue until next year.
