LIST: New movies coming to PH cinemas this August
July has been a horror, thriller-filled moment for Filipino moviegoers, with Orphan: First Kill and The Black Phone arriving in Philippine theaters that month.
But just when you thought you've already had the best in-person movie-watching experience this year, August's new released will undoubtedly keep you returning for more.
Without further ado, PhilSTAR L!fe gathered films coming this month for your next cinematic watch.
Maid in Malacañang
Philippine history junkies are in for a treat on August 3, as films related to the Marcos regime are set to appear on the big screen that day.
First up is Darryl Yap's much-talked-about film Maid in Malacañang. The movie uncovers the undertakings of the Marcos family in the presidential palace 72 hours before they were exiled to Hawaii.
Cesar Montano will star as the former president and dictator Ferdinand Marcos alongside Ruffa Gutierrez as former first lady Imelda Marcos. Their children will be played by Cristine Reyes as Imee Marcos, Diego Loyzaga as Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr., and Ella Cruz as Aimee Marcos.
Katips: The Movie
Opposite Maid in Malacañang is Katips: The Movie, which talks about a group of student activists fighting for their ideals during the martial law that happened during Marcos Sr.'s regime.
An adaptation of the Philippine Stagers Foundatio's musical 'Katips: Ang Mga Bagong Katipunero,' the film stars Jerome Ponce, Mon Confiado, Nicole Laurel, and Adelle Ibarrientos, among other artists and the ensemble cast of Philippine Stagers Foundation.
Written and directed by Atty. Vince Tañada, Katips: The Movie has earned 17 nominations for the 2022 Filipino Academy of Movie Arts and Sciences Awards after it was first screened on November 27 and December 3, 2021.
Bullet Train
Another film set to air on August 3 is Bullet Train, starring Brad Pitt as "Ladybug." Pitt is an assassin determined to carry out his mission while avoiding violence. However, fate decides otherwise as he boards a high-speed train with the world’s deadliest enemies working towards opposing goals.
BEAST
Slated to hit theaters on August 10, BEAST chronicles the healing trip of Dr. Nate Daniels (Idris Elba) and his two teenage daughters, Meredith (Iyana Halley) and Norah (Leah Sava Jeffries), that turns into a fight for survival as they are hunted by a bloodthirsty lion.
Paws of Fury: The Legend of Hank
Also scheduled for August 10 is Paws of Fury: The Legend of Hank. The animated movie follows the story of a hound dog named Hank (Michael Cera) who goes into an adventure to rise above an evil scheming villain (Ricky Gervais) to protect the feline town as town samurai.
NOPE
NOPE is a horror and sci-fi flick that follows the story of two siblings who both experienced an "uncanny and chilling discovery" and tries to capture and sell video evidence of it. Filipino moviegoers can find out what comes next as the film lands in theaters on August 17.
Emergency Declaration (비상선언)
VIVA International Pictures brings Korea’s most prominent actors to the Philippines through the film Emergency Declaration. Set for theatrical release on August 24, the film stars Song Kang-ho (Parasite, Broker), Lee Byung-hun (Squid Game, Our Blues), Jeon Do-yeon, Kim Nam-gil, Lim Si-wan, Kim So-jin, and Park Hae-jun.
Directed by Han Jae-rim, Emergency Declaration the action film centers on an aviation disaster that takes place mid-flight, driving the need to declare an emergency landing.
Easter Sunday
End the month by watching a film that hits close to home. Filipino-American stand-up comic Jo Koy brings the Filipino-American culture to the big screen as his family celebrates Easter Sunday.
A comedy film packed with “bickering, eating, drinking, laughing” and more, Easter Sunday is set to hit the big screen on August 31.
