After a slew of rumors and leaks, Electronic Arts officially revealed the latest entry in DICE's long-running Battlefield series.

Aptly titled Battlefield 2042, the "biggest, most ambitious title" in the franchise promises to offer a near-future all-out war experience in the multiplayer sandbox, including wing suits, robot dogs, and dynamic weather systems that move around the map.

In the upcoming installment, players will navigate through a world that's set a couple of years in the future, where shortages of food, energy, and clean water have led to dozens of failed nations, creating the "greatest refugee crisis in human history."

"Amidst this crisis, the United States and Russia draw the world into an all-out war," the game synopsis read. "No-Pat Specialists join both sides, not fighting for a flag, but for the future of the Non-Patriated in this new world."

According to EA, Specialists are a new iteration of playable characters that are inspired by the traditional four Battlefield classes. They will be equipped with their own unique trait and specialty, with fully customizable loadouts.

"As a Specialist, players will have access to a cutting-edge arsenal of weapons, equipment, and vehicles to use in battle. These powerful new tools give creative players a wealth of options as they find the perfect combination to fit their play style and outsmart and outgun opponents on the battlefield," EA said.

Meanwhile, there are three game options in 2042. The first one is called the All-Out Warfare, which features matches of up to 128 players for PC and next-gen consoles. Those with older consoles, however, will max out at 64 players. In addition to that, this new multiplayer option will also introduce the latest version of the Conquest and Breakthrough modes and will also include destructive weather system such as tornadoes and sandstorms that can greatly affect the in-game situation.

The second one is called the Hazard Zone, an all-new squad-based game that is "distinctly DICE but very different from All-Out Warfare’s Conquest or Breakthrough modes." The third option, meanwhile, is described as a "love letter to Battlefield fans and one that long-time players will feel right at home with." EA will reveal the still unnamed mode at EA Play on July 22.

Battlefield 2042 is an evolution of the franchise and embraces what our players want—the ultimate Battlefield multiplayer sandbox with intense combat and a ton of incredible, unexpected events,” DICE general manager Oskar Gabrielson said. “All of us across DICE in Stockholm, DICE LA, Criterion, and EA Gothenburg have had so much fun developing this game and now it’s time to let players jump in. What they’ll find is that we’ve built three distinct, absolutely epic experiences that we think they’ll love.”

The newest installment in the franchise will be available on Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5 and PC on October 22.
