Denis Villaneuve‘s sci-fi epic Dune will finally begin streaming on HBO Go in the Philippines this Christmas Day, Dec. 25.

The film’s star-studded cast includes Timothée Chalamet as hero Paul Atreides, along with Zendaya, Rebecca Ferguson, Oscar Isaac, Charlotte Rampling, Dave Bautista, Jason Momoa, Javier Bardem, Josh Brolin and Stellan Skarsgård.

Dune, based on the first part of Frank Herbert's epic 1965 sci-fi novel, is set in a far-future interstellar empire that relies on a mysterious “spice” to enable trade and faster-than-light travel.

Here's the official synopsis for the film on HBO GO's website:

"In the far future of humanity, Duke Leto Atreides accepts stewardship of the dangerous desert planet Arrakis, also known as Dune, the only source of the most valuable substance in the universe, "the spice", a drug which extends human life, provides superhuman levels of thought, and makes foldspace travel possible. Though Leto knows the opportunity is an intricate trap set by his enemies, he takes his Bene Gesserit concubine Lady Jessica, young son and heir Paul, and most trusted advisers to Arrakis. Leto takes control of the spice mining operation, which is made perilous by the presence of giant sandworms. A bitter betrayal leads Paul and Jessica to the Fremen, natives of Arrakis who live in the deep desert."

For those not familiar with the story or want a refresher on the characters, HBO has released several teaser videos including a special featurette on the Royal Houses on Tuesday (Dec. 21).

Dune was originally slated for a Nov. 20, 2020 theatrical release. However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the film faced multiple delays and was pushed back several times.

Dune was screened internationally in cinemas with a same day release on HBO Max on October 22, 2021.

It was the first blockbuster movie that screened in Philippine cinemas on Nov. 17 since the lockdown began.

The film officially crossed $300 million at the worldwide box office, which includes $71 million in 11 days of domestic grosses in the US and over $228 million in overseas earnings from its month of play.

The sequel for the film is already in the works. Dune Part 2 has been greenlit for an Oct. 20, 2023 theatrical release with director, producer and co-screenwriter Denis Villeneuve returning.

In case you missed watching it in cinemas last month, it's good to know that Dune will finally be available to watch on the small screen this Christmas Day.
