#FangirlGuide: These 12 Super Junior b-sides should be added to your K-pop playlist
Super Junior’s discography is full of hidden gems—you just have to dig deep into their albums from 2005 to 2022.
It’s hard to miss out on the music of this phenomenal group since they’ve been in the K-pop industry for a long time. For starters, their title tracks are catchy, funky, and many of them are popular among ELFs for a lot of reasons. Spy, for example, is notorious for being the song that the members “hate.”
But there’s more to Super Junior than their fun title tracks. The boy group has released a ton of songs in their career. In honor of the upcoming Super Show 9 in Manila concert, let us list 12 of our favorite Super Junior b-sides.
Take note: The list only covers their songs as a group. Sub-units, solo releases, and collabs are not included.
1. This Is Love
Super Junior and old-school R&B. Strawberry jelly and potato salad. Both of these combinations are rarely put together but when they are, they create magic. This is Love is one of the group’s most popular b-sides, which was ultimately promoted as a follow-up single, and for a good reason. It’s arrogant, confident, and a suave display of their manliness.
2. Burn The Floor
You can always expect Super Junior to bring on the drama—and Burn The Floor is a fitting example of extra done right. The orchestral melodies, percussive-heavy instrumental, and the group dominating the already-powerful song are worthy of a chef’s kiss.
3. Boom Boom
What happens if Super Junior embraces their masculinity? Boom Boom happens. A gem buried in the group’s vault, this oldie-but-goodie banger is sexy and flirtatious. If the club-inspired melody won’t convince you, then the members’ provocative vocals and the way they sing “Twinkle, twinkle little star” would send you into overdrive.
4. From U
“This song is dedicated to the world’s biggest fanclub, E-L-F. / My girls, my angels.” And ELFs go wild! From U is a love song of Super Junior to their fans—or shawties—as they thank them for their heartfelt support. The track feels like a seamless mashup of Sorry, Sorry - Answer and Marry U, but on a more wholesome note.
5. She Wants It
She Wants It is a reflection of Super Junior slowly realizing that they can be sensual if they want to. This glorious b-side takes the group’s signature funkiness and injects the right amount of heat. Oh, and did we talk about the surprising electric guitar riffs and Kyuhyun, Donghae, Ryeowook, and Yesung’s smooth vocals?
6. We Can
“We can fly away / We’re flying near the sun / Higher, look at it even more”. I know the list doesn’t cover Super Junior’s sub-units, but hear us out. We Can is part of their “special album” Devil and it shows Super Junior K.R.Y delivering a subdued performance—but with impactful emotions. While Kyuhyun, Ryeowook, and Yesung are known for their powerful vocals, they proved that they can let the quality of their voices and feelings take over.
7. Missin’ U
With a hugot title like Missin’ U, you can expect that the song will the perfect “sad boy” anthem. But no. Super Junior took a usual melancholic theme and then delivered on the camp—which they’ve always done with ease. The track is powerful, bombastic, intentionally loud, and it packs all the campy punches. Eunhyuk and Shindong launching into rapid-fire raps then Yesung and Ryeowook in a dramatic bridge is music to our ears.
8. Good Love
Super Junior are the masters of funk—and Good Love is a banger that displays their groove at its best. It’s satisfying to hear the members’ vocals blend seamlessly among themselves while still being married to the music. While their voices are worth commending, it’s Donghae’s smooth charm and unexpected rap that took our breaths away.
9. Evanesce
Bold, impactful, desperate, and heart-wrenching—Evanesce is probably one of Super Junior’s best ballads. Like This is Love, this song was promoted as a follow-up single as well. Ballads are supposed to bring in the feels, but this track takes it a notch higher and adds a touch of sophistication. It tells the story of a love gone sour through the eyes of a lovesick adult who’s gone mad. Because hey, even mature ones go through painful breakups too.
10. Stars Appear
Just Super Junior serving us a “heroine goes through epiphany” moment. Stars Appear is reminiscent of a closing song at the end of a classic K-drama where the heroine starts to rise from the ashes. Starting off slow, the track is a reminder that there’s nothing wrong with using an old formula—as long as you pull it off well. Did we mention that Kyuhyun, Ryeowook, Yesung, and Donghae sound heavenly here?
11. I Think I
As I Think I showed, there’s no group that embodies funk other than Super Junior. The banger takes inspiration from Latin music with the bachata and salsa undertones yet they make it work. The song was meant to be a prelude to the group’s ninth album Time_Slip and it’s a perfect introduction to one of their best bodies of work.
12. Simply Beautiful
Another song from the Devil special album, Simply Beautiful is dreamy and hypnotic. The melody is done in Super Junior’s signature brand of funk as it acts like a tease to fans from start to finish. Kyuhyun, Yesung, Ryeowook, Siwon, and former member Kangin’s vocals echo its construction without being too submissive, as they act like the missing ingredients the song needs.
