John Lithgow confirmed he will play Albus Dumbledore in the upcoming Harry Potter TV series.

The 79-year-old actor revealed the news in his recent interview with ScreenRant, saying it was “a total surprise.”

“I just got the phone call up at the Sundance Film Festival for yet another film, and it was not an easy decision because it's going to define me for the last chapter of my life, I'm afraid,” Lithgow told the outlet.

“But I'm very excited. Some wonderful people are turning their attention back to Harry Potter. That's why it's been such a hard decision. I'll be about 87 years old at the wrap party, but I've said yes,” he added.

HBO, the production team behind the TV adaptation, has yet to confirm the casting. Lithgow’s confirmation came two weeks after Variety reported that he is in the final talks to play the role.

In the film series, Dumbledore is the kind headmaster of the wizarding school Hogwarts. He also served as Harry’s mentor in his fight against Lord Voldemort. The role was previously played by the late Richard Harris and Michael Gambon.

Meanwhile, Paapa Essiedu may join the cast as Professor Severus Snape. The trio lead characters, Harry, Hermione, and Ron will likely be played by newcomers, per Variety. Warner Bros. launched an open casting call for kids aged between 9 and 11 in September 2024.

Lithgow is known for his roles in the films Terms of Endearment, The World According to Garp, and Footloose. He has also appeared in series like The Crown and Dexter. His recent film is the 2024 Conclave, alongside Ralph Fiennes.
