Alex Consani becomes first out trans woman to win Model of the Year at Fashion Awards
Alex Consani makes history again as she became the first out trans woman to be named the Model of the Year.
She earned the title at the British Fashion Council's 2024 Fashion Awards held on Dec. 2 at the Royal Albert Hall in London.
"I'm the first trans woman to win this award!" Alex said in her acceptance speech. "But I can't accept this award without thanking those who came before me, specifically the Black trans women who really fought for the space I'm in today—Dominique Jackson, Connie Fleming, Aaron Rose Phillips, and countless more who fought for the space that allowed me to flourish today."
The 21-year-old also thanked her parents and urged other parents of trans children to support their kids.
"Change is more than possible; it's needed," she said.
At the Fashion Awards, the young model donned a corseted gown with a Union Jack-inspired drape around her. The piece was designed by Turkish-British designer Dilara Findikoglu.
The Model of the Year award recognizes the "global impact of a model who over the last 12 months has dominated the industry." It takes into account their influence on the catwalk and contributions to the industry.
Alongside Alex, Alva Claire, Amelia Gray, Anok Yai, Liu Wen, and Mona Tougaard were nominated for the award.
Alex began modeling at the age of 12 in 2015, making her the world's youngest transgender model at the time. In addition to being a runway star, she has 1.5 million followers on Instagram and 3.9 million fans on TikTok, as of writing.
In October of 2024, Alex made history as one of the first trans women to walk for the Victoria's Secret Fashion Show along with Valentina Sampaio.
The young model has also worked with Jacquemus, Jean Paul Gaultier, Marc Jacobs, and Dion Lee, as well as appeared in the music video for Charli XCX's 360.
