BIGHIT MUSIC denies plagiarism allegations against Jungkook's 'Seven'
A month after BTS star Jungkook released his solo debut single SEVEN, the K-pop idol was accused of plagiarizing a portion of his chart-topping track.
The allegations came from South Korean composer Yang Joon-young and were published in a report South Korean news website TenAsia on Tuesday, Aug. 22.
According to the outlet, Yang claimed that a part of Jungkook's SEVEN "borrows" its "scale sequence" from the song Time of Mask, which he composed for the K-pop girl group Fin.K.L.
The report also states that Yang requested a producer in BIGHIT MUSIC to do a comparison of Jungkook's recent track and the one released by Fin.K.L in the year 2000.
BTS' record label, on the other hand, denied Yang's claims in a statement translated by Soompi.
“We would like to inform you that the claims of copyright infringement regarding Jungkook’s ‘Seven’ are not true," the statement reads.
“‘Seven’ is a song that was made through the collaboration of five foreign composers, and it is a creation that is completely unrelated to the song on a domestic album from 24 years ago like some are claiming. They are one-sided claims that do not meet any criteria such as substantial similarity and principles in determining plagiarism.”
Jungkook's SEVEN was composed by Andrew Watt, Cirkut, Jon Bellion, Latto, and Theron Makiel Thomas and produced by Watt and Cirkut.
The BTS member's solo track has so far dominated the Billboard Global 200 and Billboard Global Excl. US charts for five straight weeks since its release on July 14 this year.
