Lea Salonga's son Nic Chien reveals he's bisexual
Nic Chien, the son of Broadway legend Lea Salonga, has shared that he is bisexual.
In an interview on Rated Korina, the 19-year-old trans man shared that he had known he's attracted to both males and females since grade school.
"I was gender fluid for a while, but I figured that I'm bisexual. I'm okay with saying that out loud. I figured that out in grade 5. I'm attracted to my friends who are girls, but I'm also attracted to guys. I had the ability to label myself," Chien shared.
He was around 11 when he came out to his mom about his sexual orientation.
"I was like, 'Mama, I think I'm bisexual.' And she was like 'Okay.' That's it."
In an April interview with PEOPLE Magazine, Salonga shared that he “figured out” he was transmasculine when he was 14 years old and began taking testosterone in January 2025 at 18.
In November 2025, he shared that he finally underwent top surgery, which he described as "brutal but worth it."
Salonga has been vocal about her support for her son, even advising prospective parents against having children unless they are prepared to offer unconditional love, particularly if their child comes out as LGBTQ+.
“If they come out to you—if they say ‘mom, I'm lesbian, bisexual or trans,’ if under those conditions your love will stop. Do not have children, save yourself the drama and heartbreak. If hindi mo kaya, wag na lang,” Salonga said.
“Children are not customizable. Every kid is a blind box. You don’t know what you will get—but chances are it is the one you don’t want, but that is what you will get,” she added.
On his parents' split
During the interview, Chien also touched on his parents' relationship after Salonga revealed earlier in January that she had separated from her husband, businessman Robert Chien.
"My parents are on very good terms. My dad never cheated on my mom. My parents are still friends. They love each other, but they do not love each other romantically," the 19-year-old said.
"They care about each other very much, and they both love me very much. And they can both pursue relationships and it's totally fine with me," he continued, adding that he loves his stepmother as well.
