Nick Reiner blocked from $1.5 million trust fund amid charges over his parents' murder
A California court has blocked Nick Reiner from his $1.5 million (P92.19 million) trust fund, as he faces murder charges over the killing of his parents, Rob and Michele Reiner.
According to a PEOPLE report, Nick petitioned to access money from the trust fund, which he said was established in his name after his birth in 1993, in June to cover court fees and commissary costs.
The handlers of the trust, Paul Kanin and Jodi Pais Montgomery, denied the request, citing the "slayer statute," a law in California that prevents a person who "feloniously and intentionally" killed another from inheriting money or property.
In his initial petition, Nick claimed that he has yet to receive the mandatory distribution of half of the trust he should have received when he turned 30.
Court papers obtained by PEOPLE stated that Montgomery, the new trustee, said criminal proceedings would determine the fate of the trust fund.
She said that "no distribution should be made" until the court decides on whether the slayer statute applies to Nick's case.
"Nick's sense of urgency is real, but it did not arise in a vacuum. It arises from the death of his parents, the very settlors of the trust at issue, and Nick is presently accused of causing those deaths," the filing read.
In response, Nick's lawyer told The New York Times that a determination is needed for the slayer's statute, "not a mere accusation."
"Nick is presumed innocent and has been convicted of nothing," legal counsel Anita P. Wu said.
On Aug. 12, it was revealed that a Los Angeles County grand jury indicted Nick on murder charges in the killing of his parents.
Nick pleaded not guilty to two counts of murder with special circumstances of multiple murders, lying in wait, and using a "dangerous and deadly weapon, a knife."
The 32-year-old has been jailed without bail since his arrest in December 2025 after Rob and Michele were found stabbed to death in their upscale neighborhood in LA.
The couple shared two other children, Jake and Romy.
