Wedding bells are ringing in the distance for Sam Smith and their partner, fashion designer Christian Cowan.

The Stay With Me singer revealed that they got engaged in an interview with The New York Times published on July 28.

The announcement comes ahead of the release of Smith's upcoming studio album, titled Hazel Eyes—which was named after Cowan's eye color.

The crooner has previously said that the upcoming release was their first time writing "about requited love," after writing heartbreak anthems like I'm Not the Only OneToo Good at Goodbyes, To Die For, and Stay With Me.

"This album is an incredibly special record to me," Smith said in a press release in June.

"This record and this music [are] incredibly romantic. I've learned so many life lessons through making this album, and I've documented it all through the music."

The outlet noted that Hazel Eyes, which will be out on Aug. 21, chronicles Smith and Cowan's romance, with the singer writing Everlasting Love a night before their first date and finishing it later in their relationship.

Smith and Cowan, who both grew up in England, met online in New York in 2022. It's unclear when they started dating, but Page Six reported that the two were spotted together at an event at the White House in December 2022.

A month later, a tattoo artist shared a photo of Smith and Cowan getting inked.

After that, they were seen together at events like Cowan's runway show during New York Fashion Week in February 2023, holding hands in New York, and sharing a kiss during a Pride March.

They made their red carpet debut at the 2024 Met Gala in matching black and white tuxedos.

Smith and Cowan became each other's muses. As Smith wrote music about their partner, the singer also donned the fashion designer's creations.

During the 2026 Met Gala, the non-binary artist wore a custom garment inspired by 1920s illustrator Erté.

"It's been incredible. I've decided that I will always keep that private now," Smith said about their relationship during a GQ interview. "I have had relationships where I've shared stuff online and talked about it here and there, and I just don't want to do that."

"I think being loved by someone is such a gift—for yourself. And I think my job can get in the way of that—the purity of that love—sometimes."

Crowan's other celebrity clientele includes big names like Lady Gaga, Heidi Klum, and Jennifer Lopez.
