TV presenter Katie Piper to get prosthetic eye nearly 17 years after acid attack
TV presenter Katie Piper is getting an artificial eye nearly 17 years after she suffered an acid attack.
She shared the news of her choice on Instagram on Jan. 11, sharing that it came after "many years of battling with [her] eye health."
"I've reached the end of the road somewhat, and the decision has been made to try a prosthetic eye shell," Katie wrote in the caption of her post.
"This marks the start of a journey to have an artificial eye, with an incredible medical team behind me. As always I’m incredibly grateful to all those in the NHS and private health care system for their talent and kindness."
The 41-year-old TV star said she will share her journey of getting an artificial eye with her followers.
"I'm hopeful and nervous about being able to tolerate it," she added.
The former model was left with serious injuries and permanent scars after an acid attack organized by her ex-boyfriend when she was 24. She had to undergo surgery to repair her face and vision.
In 2009, she made a documentary about her experience titled Katie: My Beautiful Face and started a charity, the Katie Piper Foundation, to support people living with burns and other scars.
In 2022, she was appointed an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) for her work helping burn victims and other disfigurement injuries.
