Rachel McAdams admits regret for turning down Andy Sachs role in ‘The Devil Wears Prada'
Rachel McAdams said she “feels guilty” for not seizing the opportunities she had been given during her two-year break.
The Notebook and Mean Girls star Rachel McAdams bares her authentic self during the photoshoot and interview with Bustle magazine.
After graduating from York University’s theater program, McAdams debuted in Hollywood in 2002, where she started birthing to her iconic roles in the films Mean Girls, The Notebook, and The Hot Chick, among others.
But despite the success of her career, McAdams can’t deny that she had a “complicated relationship” with fame.
“You don’t go to theater school to learn about how to deal with that. There’s no book on how to navigate that.” McAdams also shared an incident where she refused to pose nude for a cover of Vanity Fair in 2006 alongside Scarlett Johansson and Keira Knightley. Setting firmly on her boundaries, McAdams walked off the set and then decided to take a two-year break around that year.
It was also the time when she was offered to play as Andy Sachs, which was portrayed instead by Anne Hathaway, in the film The Devil Wears Prada. The fan favorite movie garnered $326 million worldwide.
Other than this, she revealed she also turned down roles in A-list movies Casino Royale, Mission: Impossible III, Iron Man, and Get Smart.
McAdams spent her break with her family, biking, and “recentering.”
Looking back, the About Time actress reveals she had regrets, thinking of what could’ve been.
“There’s certainly things like ‘I wish I’d done that.’” However, seeing the success of the said movies, she said: “I step back and go, ‘That was the right person for that.’”
“I felt guilty for not capitalizing on the opportunity that I was being given, because I knew I was in such a lucky spot,” she said, adding: “But I also knew it wasn't quite jiving with my personality and what I needed to stay sane.”
“There were definitely some anxious moments of wondering if I was just throwing it all away, and why was I doing that? It’s taken years to understand what I intuitively was doing,” she continued.
Moreover, McAdams also expressed her willingness to appear in the film adaptation of Mean Girls The Musical.
“I don’t see a way to shoehorn us in,” she told Bustle. “If Tina [Fey] can figure it out, I’m there, for sure.”
