Jason Mraz looks back on coming out as bisexual later in life

Jason Mraz recalled his coming out story as he revealed why he decided to embrace his sexuality and make it known to the public later in life.

On the podcast Dinner's on Me hosted by Modern Family star Jesse Tyler Ferguson, the musician pointed out that being gay "was like [the] punchline of a joke" back in the '90s. "I didn't want to be the punchline of a joke," he continued.

According to Mraz, having been raised in a conservative place was also a factor in his decision. "I still took with me the conservative street that I grew up on, and that was very hard to ignore or to break out of," he opened up. "I was very shy and and scared of what my family would say, or what my hometown would think or just whatever."

The I'm Yours singer said that while he began being more experienced sexually only when he got older, it still made him feel like he had a restart button in life.

"My experiences are few, whereas other people my age might be more experienced. That's all," he shared, later adding that he's been in "amazing relationships" since he came out.

Mraz, however, has yet to find love again. "I love where I am and I feel so much love for myself finally that can only enhance the next relationship when I find one," he mused.

Mraz came out as bisexual in 2018. "I’ve had experiences with men, even while I was dating the woman who became my wife," he told Billboard, referring to former coffee shop owner Christina Carano, with whom he tied the knot in 2015 and divorced eight years later.

"It was like, ‘Wow, does that mean I am gay?’ And my wife laid it out for me. She calls it ‘two spirit,’ which is what the Native Americans call someone who can love both man and woman. I really like that," he said at the time.
