Rupert Grint steps back into Ron Weasley’s shoes for 'Harry Potter and the Cursed Child' on Broadway

Rupert Grint is heading back to the Wizarding World as he is set to reprise his role as Ron Weasley in the Broadway production of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child next year.

The exciting news was announced by the production's official Instagram account, sharing a script with Grint's name alongside his character.

Grint last played as Ron when he was 22 years old back in 2011, when the final Harry Potter film, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2, was released.

The now 38-year-old actor will be portraying the grown-up version of Ron for the Broadway show, which will run from Feb. 2 to May 30, 2027.

"Ron Weasley has been a part of me since I was 11 years old and I can’t wait to meet him again in this stage of life," Grint said in a statement on the Harry Potter website.

"There is something so full-circle and so special about stepping back into Ron’s shoes now when we are both fathers; it is somehow both very familiar and completely new," he added.

He went on to gush about how excited he is to be back on Broadway in a role that defined so much of his life.

"The first time I saw Cursed Child onstage, I was blown away and I can’t wait to set foot back on platform 9 ¾ and pick up where I left off. I am overjoyed to join this exceptional cast and crew at the Lyric Theatre this winter," he said.

Producers Sonia Friedman and Colin Callender meanwhile highlighted that Grint is "not simply revisiting a role from his past," but continuing a journey.

"He is continuing a journey he began as a child and carrying it forward with all the life and experience he has gained since filming concluded, including a career that has taken him from film to television to acclaimed stage work on both Broadway and the West End," they said.

"His return creates a powerful bridge between the story audiences first fell in love with and the story of family, legacy and the passage of time that Harry Potter and the Cursed Child carries forward," they added.

Grint will be the second actor from the original franchise to reprise his role for the play. Tom Felton previously portrayed Draco Malfoy in his debut on Nov. 11, 2025 and will play his final performance on Jan. 3, 2027.

The play is set 19 years after the events of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. It follows Harry's second son Albus Severus Potter as he faces the pressures of living up to the Potter name.

It will be staged at the New York’s Lyric Theatre. You can get early access to the tickets through the pre-sale happening on Sept. 1 through their website.
