Jo Koy acknowledges Golden Globes hosting's negative reviews, including how Taylor Swift joke fell 'a little flat'
Filipino-American stand-up comedian Jo Koy acknowledged the negative reviews of his Golden Globe Awards hosting, including how his joke about pop star Taylor Swift fell “a little flat.”
On television program GMA3: What You Need to Know, Jo Koy, the first Fil-Am to host the movie and television awards show, said he is not going to lie that the reviews didn’t hurt.
“It’s a tough room. It was a hard job,” he said. “I hit a moment there where I was like, ‘Ah.’ Hosting is just a tough gig.”
He reiterated that he and his team only got 10 days to write his monologue for the show.
In any case, Jo Koy said he had fun and that his hosting was a moment that he will always remember.
“It was a crash course,” he said. “I feel bad, but I got to still say I loved what I did.”
As for his jab to Swift that the Golden Globes had fewer shots of her than National Football League games—which showed her keeping a straight face as she pursed her lips and sipped her drink—Jo Koy said it was a “weird joke.”
“But it was more on the NFL,” he said. “I was trying to make fun of the NFL using cutaways and how the Globes didn’t have to do that. So it was more of a jab toward the NFL. But it just didn’t come out that way.”
Jo Koy has been making the rounds on social media with his Golden Globes monologue that drew mixed reactions from celebrities and viewers.
Aside from the viral Swift joke, his opening monologue also included him talking about Irish actor Barry Keoghan’s penis size in a nude scene in the thriller comedy Saltburn.
“Where is your penis seated? Down front? That was the real star of the show,” he asked Keoghan.
Jo Koy also mentioned the leading nominees, including the coming-of-age musical The Color Purple, saying it’s “what happens to your butt when you take Ozempic,” a weight-loss drug.
What perhaps took the cake was when Jo Koy compared the biopic Oppenheimer and the comedy Barbie, saying the former was based on the 721-page Pulitzer Prize-winning book about the Manhattan Project and the latter “about a plastic doll with big boobies.”
“The key moment in Barbie is when she goes from perfect beauty to bad breath, cellulite and flat feet—or what casting directors call, character actor,” Jo Koy said, much to the crowd's dismay. This prompted him to say he “got the gig 10 days ago,” and that some writers were responsible for the material.
The 81st Golden Globe Awards were held on Monday, Jan. 8 (Philippine time) in Los Angeles, California. It recognized the best films and TV series from the past year, with Oppenheimer and Succession as the big winners of the night.
Prior to his Golden Globes gig, Jo Koy had shows in Hawaii, San Francisco, Winnipeg, and San Diego, as well as stand-up specials on Netflix, including Live from Seattle and Comin' in Hot. He also starred in the movie Easter Sunday and the animated supernatural horror Haunted Mansion.
