A 72-year-old woman is joining Miss Universe Argentina-Buenos Aires this year after the Miss Universe Organization (MUO) removed the age limit for contestants.

Iris Amelia Alioto is a dance teacher, translator, actress, and model.

If she wins the regional pageant, she will compete in Miss Universe Argentina, whose winner would represent the country in the annual global tilt. She will also be the first senior citizen in the country to vie for the highly coveted title.

Apart from Iris, a 69-year-old candidate in the Miss Universe Philippines-Quezon City pageant is also making the rounds online.

Jocelyn Cubales, also known as Joyce Penas Pilarsky, is a fashion designer who has joined various beauty pageants here and abroad. She became the first Pinay to join Mrs. Universe 2017, where she won a special award for her advocacy and charity work for children and women in the Philippines. She was also crowned Mrs. Philippines Germany in 2000 as well as Mrs. Asia International, Mrs. Asia International Global, and Mrs. Ecotourism in 2014.

If Jocelyn is named MUPH-QC on the coronation night on Feb. 5, she will represent the city at the 2024 edition of Miss Universe Philippines.

Last September, the MUO, through then-reigning queen R’Bonney Gabriel, announced that it’s already allowing women above 28 to join its pageants. It’s one of the pageant’s new rules, including letting transgender women, divorced women, wives, and mothers to compete.

Sheynnis Palacios of Nicaragua was crowned Miss Universe 2023. This year’s pageant will be held in Mexico.
