George and Amal Clooney evacuate home in France amid ongoing Europe wildfires
George and Amal Clooney and their children have evacuated their home in France as the wildfires continue across Europe.
Per PEOPLE, the couple and their nine-year-old twins Alexander and Ella live in Brignoles, a town in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region of southeastern France. The region is one of many affected by the wildfires currently raging across France, Spain, Italy, Portugal, and Greece.
According to the BBC, the ongoing wildfires began in mid-July. On July 29. French president Emmanuel Macron described the wildfires as "completely unprecedented" and the "toughest since World War II". An Associated Press report estimated the size of the fires in France to be four times the size of Paris.
Along with the celebrity couple, around 3,000 others evacuated their region, while about 224,000 were evacuated in France's Gironde region, per CNN. In Spain, where the wildfires have encroached on regions outside Madrid, at least 63,100 were evacuated.
The Clooneys shared news of their evacuation in a letter to the mayor of Brignoles.
"At this point, we have no idea whether our beautiful home makes it through this terrible moment," George wrote, confirmed by a representative for the actor.
"As we evacuate Brignoles, we want to emphasize two things: first, we hope you and the people of our city are safe, and second that Amal and I are committed to making sure that whatever happens to our village, we are part of this community and we'll be part of making it whole," the letter continued.
"We love Brignoles and our friends who live there," Clooney added.
The fiercely private celebrity couple decided to live primarily at a farmhouse in France to escape the paparazzi culture in Hollywood. In an October 2025 interview with Esquire, George explained their decision had to do with raising their children away from the public eye.
"They're not on their iPads, you know? They have dinner with grown-ups and have to take their dishes in. They have a much better life," the Academy Award winner said.
In Los Angeles, his celebrity status would have made a normal life impossible for his twins, George said.
"I felt like they were never going to get a fair shake at life," he said. "France, they kind of don't give a s**t about fame. I don't want [my children] to be walking around worried about paparazzi. I don't want them being compared to somebody else's famous kids."
The actor also owns property in England, Italy, and the US.
