'You'll Be in My Heart' singer Phil Collins says he nearly died in 2024 from alcohol abuse
English singer Phil Collins has opened up about a difficult time in his life when he almost died in 2024 due to alcohol addiction.
In an interview with The Times of London, Collins shared that he was previously admitted to a Swiss hospital for his alcohol problem in late 2023. While he was initially discharged, he had to be rushed back and placed into intensive care.
During this time, he was mostly unconscious, but the singer remembered that his body was already failing.
"My kidneys were packing up, my organs were just seizing up. People were coming to say goodbye. But I don’t remember them coming. I didn’t have [any] idea this was going on. They were all worried that they wouldn’t see me again. It could all have gone so terribly wrong," he said.
He also recalled how his five children began discussing what to do with his health condition.
"There were some decisions to be made about ‘Do we keep Phil on life support?’ kind of thing," he recalled.
However, Collins has since made a remarkable recovery and said the near-death experience became a turning point in his life.
"I was very lucky to have come out of that. Needless to say, I haven’t had a drink since," he highlighted.
Collins is best known as the drummer and later lead vocalist of the rock band Genesis before eventually launching his solo career with the release of his album Face Value in 1981. He is also known for composing music for Disney's Tarzan, including You'll Be in My Heart, Two Worlds, and Strangers Like Me.
