Julie Andrews shares why she won’t return for ‘The Princess Diaries 3’

Julie Andrews won’t be returning to Genovia as Queen Clarisse Renaldi in the upcoming The Princess Diaries 3.

The 90-year-old actress confirmed in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter that she turned down the opportunity to reprise her role in the third installment.

According to Andrews, she had been asked throughout the past year to join the film but ultimately decided against it.

“I think the absolute truth is that I think I’m really past all that now,” Andrews said, explaining that while she is not completely retired, her work has shifted toward writing books, podcasts, and voiceovers.

Andrews added that her decision was not due to a lack of enthusiasm for the film, but she simply did not feel that she should be part of the new installment.

“I think the story has to continue in Princess Mia,” she said, referring to Anne Hathaway’s character, Mia Thermopolis.

Andrews played Queen Clarisse, Mia’s grandmother and the queen of the fictional kingdom of Genovia, in the first two Princess Diaries films released in 2001 and 2004. The films starred Andrews alongside Hathaway, who played Mia as she went from an awkward teenager to a royal heir.

Hathaway is set to reprise her role, with Adele Lim directing.

During a recent visit to SiriusXM’s Radio Andy, host Andy Cohen asked Hathaway the question on every fan's mind: "Where are we at on Princess Diaries 3?"

“I’m busy making baby No. 3 and that has sort of taken the place of knowing exactly when I can make Princess Diaries 3,” Hathaway, who is pregnant with her third baby with husband Adam Shulman, said.

She revealed there’s been a bit of a story breakthrough, sharing that the movie is finally "moving in the right direction."

"The script that we were working on—we kind of had to start over with this new direction, which is not the update I think anybody wants, but we all feel really good that this is gonna be the one,” she added.
