Catholics celebrating milestones such as weddings, birthdays, baptisms, and ordinations can request a special blessing from the Pope through the Vatican.

Known as a Papal Blessing or Apostolic Blessing, it is a blessing imparted in the Pope's name. Those who wish to commemorate the occasion can also request an official parchment bearing the blessing through the Vatican's Office of Papal Charities.

The parchment serves as a keepsake of the blessing and is available for specific religious occasions and personal milestones.

Who can receive a Papal Blessing?

According to the Vatican's Elemosineria Apostolica, or Office of Papal Charities, Papal Blessing parchments may be requested for several occasions.

These include baptism, first holy communion, confirmation, and marriage. They are also available for priestly ordinations, permanent diaconate ordinations, and religious professions.

Catholics celebrating milestone anniversaries may also request a parchment for their 10th to 80th wedding anniversary, as well as anniversaries of priestly ordination and religious profession, at the intervals specified by the Vatican.

The Vatican also accepts requests for certain milestone birthdays, including a person's 18th, 30th, 40th, 50th, 55th, 60th, 65th, 70th, 75th, 80th, 85th, 90th, 95th, and 100th to 110th birthdays.

For certain occasions, the requester must declare that the intended recipient is a practicing Catholic. The Vatican also has specific eligibility requirements, so not every personal celebration qualifies for a parchment.

How to request a Papal Blessing

Filipinos can request a Papal Blessing parchment directly through the Vatican's official website.

Applicants must first visit the Elemosineria Apostolica's official Papal Blessing Parchments page. The Vatican cautions against using unauthorized websites or intermediaries to submit their requests.

From there, select the appropriate occasion and corresponding parchment design before filling out the request form. Then, provide details such as the recipient's full name, the occasion, and the date and location of the celebration or sacrament, when applicable. You must also supply your contact details and complete delivery address.

After completing the form, pay the required contribution. The parchment costs €21 to €30 (approximately P1,500 to P2,200), depending on the design. International DHL Express shipping starts at €15 (approximately P1,100), with the final amount depending on the destination and number of parchments ordered.

Once the payment and request are processed, the parchment will be delivered to the address provided.

The Vatican estimates that delivery takes approximately 30 days.

Applicants should plan ahead, as the Vatican requires requests for sacraments, religious professions, and anniversaries to be made within a specific period: the date of the celebration must be between four and six months from the date of the request.

This means those planning to request a parchment for an upcoming wedding, baptism, or anniversary should check the requirements and submit their application well in advance.
