A Quezon City court has ordered the closure of the iconic Mang Larry's Isawan in UP Diliman Campus.

Mang Larry's Isawan on Friday confirmed the closure of its main branch in E. Jacinto Street, following a court order.

"Sa loob ng maraming taon na palipat lipat, minsan kami ay lumaban pero ganun talaga merong nananalo at merong natatalo," they wrote.

The iconic street food stall thanked the University for the opportunity to do business on the campus.

"Ganun pa man, maraming salamat UP sa pagkakataon na makabenta at mabuhay ang aming pamilya," they added, thanking their customers as well.

They assured that they will continue serving them at their Magiting and UST branches. "Hanggang sa muli sa aming bagong main branch!"

In a previous post, Mang Larry's Isawan said that their UP Branch is "temporarily closed for relocation until further notice."

According to Tinig ng Plaridel, the court ordered the popular barbecue place in UP Diliman to vacate its location after its owner, Laurencio Convencido Jr., lost a civil case against UP.

Because of this, Convencido has to pay not less than P47,500 for "unpaid rental arrears" since October 2021 and "use and occupation of the property." He will also have to pay P1,000 as part of the filing of the case.

Meanwhile, Convencido's wife, Elizabeth, claimed that the land was given to them and that they have a Deed of Absolute Sale since 2019.

Their son, Angelo, also said that they never received an eviction notice before the closure on Friday, and was surprised to see the Quezon City anti-squatting task force arrive at the location.

Despite that, he thanked the community for the continuous support.

"Naging malinaw naman, at hindi na namin kailangang makipagtalo, makikipag-coordinate na lang kami," Angelo said. "Thank you sa UP sa binigay na pagkakataon na magtinda sa loob ng campus sa loob ng matagal na panahon."

First opened in 1984, Mang Larry's Isawan serves grilled Pinoy favorites in skewers like pork barbecue, isaw manok, isaw baboy, balunbalunan, tenga, and atay. It also has larger grilled items like liempo, bangus, and pusit.

It also offers fried street food like fish ball, kwek kwek, and other "tusok-tusok" items, chicharon bulaklak, chicken skin, butcheron and fries, as well as "silog" rice meals, beef pares, and noodles.

The South China Morning Post in 2019 noted that the stall, frequented by people from all walks of life, including celebrities and politicians, sells about 4,000 skewers a day. This translates to an income of about a million pesos monthly.

Since it opened in 1984, it has moved around multiple times around the campus.
