The cause of death of former child star Daveigh Chase has been revealed.

According to NBC News, the Los Angeles medical examiner listed AIDS (Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome) as her cause of death, along with chronic polysubstance use and other significant conditions. AIDS is a late stage of HIV infection, while chronic polysubstance use is "using more than one drug or substance at the same time or within a short period of time," per Cleveland Clinic.

She died on June 16 at a hospital, her father told NBC News, adding that she "had been homeless" and living in LA near the medical facility.

Chase's boyfriend Roy Hernandez first revealed to TMZ that the actress suffered from meningitis, an inflammation of the area surrounding the brain and spinal cord, and "several serious blood infections."

In a GoFundMe page before Chase's death, he shared that the latter's condition turned critical, and that he was told by her doctors that "she may not have much time left."

Chase's former manager and longtime friend John Ryan, however, told the public via Deadline not to donate to the fundraiser as he claimed that the actress' estate "has plenty of means to pay for the cremation" and that her father “never signed any paperwork over to this so-called boyfriend."

Chase rose to fame through her role in Donnie Darko and later in the American dub of Studio Ghibli's Spirited Away. She also brought Lilo to life in the Lilo & Stitch films, for which she won a Young Artist Award for Best Performance in a Voice-Over Role and an Annie Award for outstanding voice acting in an animated feature in 2003.

She also played Samara Morgan in the hit horror film The Ring, for which she won an MTV Movie Award for Best Villain.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Chase faced several legal troubles later in life, including charges related to drug possession and unauthorized use of a stolen vehicle.
