'Bridgerton' Season 5 to premiere in 2027
The next season of Bridgerton is coming sooner than you think!
In a press release, Netflix said that the fifth season of Netflix's hit romance drama series is set to air in 2027. This time, the show will be led by Hannah Dodd and Masali Baduza, who play Lady Francesca Stirling and Michaela Stirling, respectively.
"Two years after losing her beloved husband John, Francesca decides to reenter the marriage mart for practical reasons. But when John’s cousin Michaela returns to London to tend to the Kilmartin estate, Francesca’s complicated feelings will have her questioning whether to stick to her pragmatic intentions or pursue her inner passions," the premise for the new season read.
The streaming giant highlighted that the upcoming chapter will feature Bridgerton’s "first same-gender central love story."
“It feels groundbreaking. Obviously, there are a lot of great shows that have depicted queer love. We’re not the first by any means,” series showrunner Jess Brownell said. “But to make an entire Bridgerton season about a sapphic relationship feels huge.”
Dodd and Baduza both expressed excitement over the chance to work on a queer love story.
“[Queer love stories] have traditionally been excluded from things like period dramas—and queer people did exist, have always existed, and will always exist,” Dodd said.
Baduza added, “It’s been really special to have Jess guide us on this journey, because she’s very excited about this story. What we really want to achieve is giving a realistic view of queer love onscreen and [giving them] a happily ever after.”
On what fans can expect from the season, Brownell highlighted that there will be a "signature mix of romance, humor, and pathos" as well as "big-time yearning" between Francesca and Michaela.
“It’s going to be a season about queer joy. It is not going to be a season about queer trauma… We’re having so much fun!” she said.
"More than ever, Season 5 is going to be about yearning… Those of us who know what it’s like to be in a sapphic relationship or have a sapphic crush understand that’s so baked into the experience,” she added.
Dodd and Baduza will be joined by three new cast members: Tega Alexander, Jacqueline Boatswain, and Gemma Knight Jones.
The exact premiere date for the new season has yet to be revealed.
Set in the early 19th century, the show follows the wealthy Bridgerton family as they navigate love, marriage, and high society in Regency-era London.
Season 4, which revolved around Benedict Bridgerton (Luke Thompson) and Sophie Baek's (Yerin Ha) love story, was released in late January of this year.
