Driveway of Nicolas Cage’s $10 million Malibu property collapses into sinkhole
A massive sinkhole damaged Nicolas Cage’s Malibu beachfront property after dangerous waves and rain from Tropical Storm Marie battered the Southern California coast.
On Tuesday, Sept. 8, a sinkhole near the actor’s beachfront home collapsed part of the private road and damaged a driveway, triggering a gas leak. Firefighters and SoCalGas crews contained the leak and temporarily shut off gas service along part of the street to assess the area.
By evening, the sinkhole had reportedly expanded to about 30 feet wide and 25 feet deep. Photos from the area showed a large crater where portions of the road and surrounding concrete had been given way.
No injuries were reported, and no one was believed to be inside the property when the collapse occurred.
The city of Malibu prohibited entry to five total homes on the street Tuesday, officials said in a statement. The private neighborhood sits between the ocean and the iconic Pacific Coast Highway.
According to records, the 4,000-square-foot Malibu home was sold for $10.5 million in 2024. The property, which overlooks the Pacific Ocean, includes a rooftop deck and was reportedly undergoing renovations when the sinkhole appeared. Its previous buyer shared with New York Times that Cage bought the property.
The 62-year-old actor is best known for films including Moonstruck, Face/Off Con Air, National Treasure and Pig. He won the Academy Award for Best Actor for his performance in Leaving Las Vegas in 1996 and in 2003 for his role as Charlie Kaufman in the film Adaptation.
He recently starred in the Amazon series Spider-Noir. He’ll play John Madden in a biographical film about the NFL coach and commentator out later this year. (with reports from AP)
