Martha Stewart is speaking out after sparking backlash online for dressing up as a person experiencing homelessness for her Halloween costume.

In a since-deleted post on Oct. 31, the businesswoman and television personality posted a picture of herself wearing tattered clothing and dirty makeup while holding a sign that read, "I AM HUNGRY HELP ME!!"

Many were quick to criticize the costume as making light of homelessness and turning a serious social issue into a Halloween joke.

Following this, Stewart expressed regret that her costume had offended some people and maintained that this was not her intention.

"I am distressed that my Halloween costume yesterday, which was intended to bring more awareness to the very serious subject of homelessness, has offended people, which was never my intention," she said in a statement sent to PEOPLE.

"Homelessness continues to remain one of America’s greatest challenges and ongoing crises, something that I care deeply about, and I have spent a significant amount of time and effort supporting charities that combat this ongoing social epidemic. I am committed to continuing to make a difference," she added.

Stewart later made a follow-up statement apologizing for her actions.

"It’s hard to admit when you’ve really screwed up. My earlier statement didn’t go far enough. I know many people are economically struggling. Wearing a costume like I did was insensitive and not funny. I’m very sorry," she said.

Stewart has never shied away from getting into the Halloween spirit, having used her platform to share festive recipes, unique craft ideas, and giving tips to entertain guests during the occasion.
