Sequel to James Gunn's 'Superman' set for 2027 release
The next chapter in DC Studios’ reimagined Superman saga is officially on the horizon.
On his social media accounts, filmmaker James Gunn revealed the title and release date of the hit superhero movie starring David Corenswet.
"Man of Tomorrow. In theatres July 9, 2027," he wrote in the caption, which included a comic book artwork of the titular hero standing next to his nemesis Lex Luthor.
Luthor is notably sporting his famous warsuit that grants him superhuman strength, energy projection, flight, among others, which could mean he’ll be going head-to-head with Superman in a much bigger way this time.
While plot details and new cast members have yet to be announced, it's expected that Corenswet will return to reprise his role as Superman along with Nicholas Hoult as Luthor.
Other stars that could return include Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific, Anthony Carrigan as Metamorpho, Nathan Fillion as Green Lantern, and Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl.
Corenswet first teased about the sequel when he was subjected to a lie detector test alongside Hoult in an interview with Vanity Fair.
The moment came when Hoult asked: if given the chance, would Corenswet rather reprise his Superman role or become a Jedi Knight in Star Wars? Without hesitation, Corenswet said, "Jedi Knight."
When asked if it was hard to choose between the two, Corenswet said, "It was among them. In the end, as many things do, it came down to the money. I'm already under contract for a sequel, but I’d be fresh negotiating with Star Wars, so."
Gunn's Superman film, released in July, marks the start of the rebooted DC Universe.
It follows Superman as he navigates his role as Earth's protector while dealing with public mistrust and a rising threat from Lex Luthor, played by Nicholas Hoult. The story explores the balance between his Kryptonian heritage and his human upbringing, highlighting themes of identity, purpose, and hope.
