Man dies after being swept over 600-foot Yosemite waterfall
A 23-year-old man fell to his death from a 600-foot waterfall in California.
The National Park Service confirmed the incident to the Los Angeles Times, saying the victim was reportedly swept over at Nevada Fall in Yosemite National Park on June 20.
"Emergency personnel responded to the incident, which remains under investigation," they said.
The Mariposa County Sheriff's Office confirmed the identity of the victim as Josue Baires Alfaro. He was reportedly found in the Merced River.
Multiple users on the online forum Reddit reported that Alfaro was there to rescue a girl.
The LA Times, citing a Reddit user, reported that a "group of friends was dragged down by the current at the top of Nevada Fall, which is located below the granite dome, known as Liberty Cap."
Police have yet to confirm the details of the alleged witness accounts.
Nevada Fall is notorious for its steep, slippery 600-foot descent and powerful, fast-moving currents.
