A live-action 'Rugrats' with CGI babies is in the works
The toddlers of beloved Nickelodeon series Rugrats are returning to the big screen.
Paramount is working on a live-action and CGI hybrid film on the 90s kid show, with Pitch Perfect director Jason Moore at the helm.
Tommy Pickles and his buddies Chuckie Finster and twins Phil and Lil DeVille will be getting the same treatment as Sonic the Hedgehog did in its 2020 film wherein the hero is animated while set in the real world.
ICYDK, Rugrats followed the group of toddlers and their daily adventures in learning about the world. The series also featured their parents, bully Angelica Pickles, Tommy's baby brother Dil, and more, but it's unknown yet if these characters will be part of the upcoming movie.
The original show ran from 1991 to 2004 and spawned three animated films including The Rugrats Movie (1998), Rugrats in Paris (2000), and Rugrats Go Wild (2003); a sequel series All Grown Up where the babies are teens; a live musical show; books; video games; and a 2021 reboot with a 3D art style.
The new series also featured the original voice cast reprising their roles, including E.G. Daily, Nancy Cartwright, Cheryl Chance, Cree Summer, Kathie Soucie, and Tara Strong.
In addition to Moore, the upcoming film's crew consists of Saturday Night Live's Mikey Day and Streeter Seidell as writers, Karen Rosenfelt and Rugrats co-creators Arlene Klasky and Gábor Csupó as producers.
