'Game of Thrones: Aegon's Conquest' set for 2029 release

Games of Thrones is coming to the big screen.

Warner Bros. has officially set upcoming spinoff Game of Thrones: Aegon’s Conquest for a 2029 release, marking the first movie set in the world of HBO’s hit fantasy franchise.
 
The film is scheduled to hit cinemas on June 1, 2029, with Owen Harris directing and Beau Willimon writing the screenplay. 

Unlike the original series, which followed the battle for the Iron Throne among the great houses of Westeros, the upcoming film will take viewers hundreds of years further back in the fictional kingdom’s history.

Who is Aegon the Conqueror?

As the title suggests, the movie will center on Aegon I Targaryen, better known as Aegon the Conqueror—the first Targaryen king of Westeros and the figure responsible for uniting much of the continent under one crown.  

Aegon arrived in Westeros with his sister-wives, Visenya and Rhaenys Targaryen, and their three dragons: Balerion, Vhagar, and Meraxes. Together, they launched a campaign that brought several of Westeros’ previously divided kingdoms under Targaryen rule and established the dynasty that would dominate the continent for generations.  

The story takes place roughly 300 years before the events of Game of Thrones, meaning fans will be going even further back than House of the Dragon, which takes place around 200 years before the original series.  

It will also be the first time Aegon the Conqueror himself is portrayed on screen.

Who is making the movie? 

Owen Harris, who directed episodes of HBO’s A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, will lead the film. He has also directed episodes of Black Mirror and other television projects. 

The screenplay will be written by Beau Willimon, known for creating House of Cards and for his work on Andor. 

No cast has been announced yet, and Warner Bros. has not revealed when filming will begin. Details about the plot beyond Aegon’s conquest also remain under wraps.
