French actor Arnaud Denis dies by euthanasia at 43
French actor and theater director Arnaud Denis died by euthanasia in Belgium on Sept. 22 at age 43, following years of severe health complications after undergoing hernia surgery.
Euronews reported that Denis underwent surgery for a right groin hernia on July 17, 2023, during which doctors fitted a polypropylene mesh in the area. He later experienced a range of side effects and eventually underwent another procedure to have the implant removed in the US in April 2024.
He was diagnosed with myalgic encephalomyelitis, an inflammatory reaction associated with exposure to an adjuvant. Per the outlet, the implant affected his immune system.
Denis filed a complaint with the Public Health Division of the Paris public prosecutor's office in January over what he described as "unintentional injuries." The complaint was dropped at the end of August due to a lack of a sufficiently established offense, according to Euronews.
As his health deteriorated, Denis spoke publicly about complications he associated with hernia implants. He used his experience to raise awareness, bringing together other patients who reported similar problems through a group called "French victims of hernia prostheses."
"I can no longer leave my home, I have no social life, I have no life at all," he said in an interview with French regional newspaper Dauphiné Libéré earlier this year. "I no longer have anything that constitutes the dignity of a man's life. And it is getting worse and worse. I live like a cancer patient in the terminal phase. The doctors have nothing left to offer me."
In a Facebook post days before his death, Denis addressed other people living with myalgic encephalomyelitis and hernia implant complications, writing in French, "I am denouncing here the violence of a medical system that crushes patients instead of helping them when they do not 'fit into the boxes.'"
He also wrote about his decision to end his life. "I held on, no matter what, through years of atrocious suffering. Now I am laying down my arms. It is my right."
His lawyer, Philippe Courtois, told AFP that Denis' decision to undergo euthanasia was made after a consultation with three doctors in Namur, Belgium.
"His body could no longer carry him. He had lost control of it. Arnaud Denis’ death is the consequence of the intense pain he had been enduring for many months," Courtois said.
His lawyer described the situation as a "silent public health scandal," alleging that thousands of patients had been exposed to high-risk implants without adequate information or informed consent.
Before his health problems, Denis became known for his work in French theater. He directed productions of Choderlos de Laclos' Les Liaisons Dangereuses and Molière's Les Femmes Savantes, among other works. He founded the theater company Les Compagnons de la Chimère in 2003 and continued working as an actor and director throughout his career.
