Filipina tennis star Alex Eala and her Turkish partner Zeynep Sonmez bowed out of the Wuhan Open women’s doubles competition after falling to Ukrainian pair Anhelina Kalinina and Dayana Yastremska on Tuesday, Oct. 13.

Eala and Sonmez suffered a 2-6, 3-6 defeat in the Round of 32 at the tournament in Wuhan, China, ending their campaign without a win.

The Filipino-Turkish tandem struggled to keep pace with their opponents in the opening set. They managed to win two games but could not overcome the Ukrainians’ early advantage.

The defeat marked the end of Eala’s Wuhan Open campaign after her singles exit on Monday, Oct. 12. She lost to China’s Han Shi in three sets, 6-4, 3-6, 3-6, in the first round at the Optics Valley International Tennis Center.

Eala returned to the WTA Tour following her campaign at the 2026 Asian Games in Nagoya, Japan, where she won a bronze medal in women’s singles.

She had previously reached the third round of the US Open before an early exit at the Singapore Tennis Open.
