Want to be a social media star? You can earn a bachelor's degree in 'influencing' at University of Texas
So, you want to be an influencer? You can pursue a degree on that alone at a university in the US.
South China Morning Post reported that the University of Texas is offering a bachelor's degree in digital media influencing, which includes topics like photo editing and website development as well as audience psychology and data analytics.
“We want to take the idea [of] media influencing and bring it into the 21st century,” associate communication professor and program developer Chad Mahood said, adding that while it's possible to learn influencing skills by yourself, it's still different if you have a degree in line with it as it would give you greater credibility with brands and companies.
Available online and in-person, the program has eight students so far. Around eighty more are expected to enroll in it soon.
According to SCMP, the students would need to come up with capstone projects that they would test and analyze with target audiences in their final year.
Mahood added that the degree goes beyond social media influencing as graduates can also pursue other jobs in line with content creation, advertising, and public relations when they finish the program.
"Becoming an influencer is largely based on selling your own brand, but it's about more than a good video or website. It's about understanding, analyzing, and connecting with an audience," he continued.
