These women entrepreneurs made it big with the help of Lazada

While most retail businesses suffered due to the effects of the pandemic in the past years, some brands within certain industries still thrived during these trying times—thanks to the online world.

E-Commerce platforms like Lazada has made it easy for MSMEs to do business and has also opened doors for people, including women. Leaving a corporate job for a dream you have been wanting to do for so long is indeed a brave move nowadays. For Arianne Amante, who owns the emerging beauty brand Clocheflame, there is no other time but now for her to turn passion into a business.

More than just a beauty brand, Clocheflame used to be Amante’s personal safe space through writing poetry for her school’s publication. She was 15 at that time.

“I always knew I wanted to start a beauty brand. Even back in college, my thesis was all about Filipinos’ self-perception of beauty. I wasn’t always the most confident person in the room,” Amante said.

Amante’s blog has evolved into something big—a business that sells makeup and skincare to give everyone a boost of confidence. She started her beauty brand at the onset of the pandemic with the desire to create products that will inspire and uplift other people.

Amante said the beauty brand, which is currently manned by five people, taps local manufacturers and sources its materials locally, as this is “our little way of extending help to boost our economy.”

In terms of sustainability, Amante noted that the brand uses less plastic and recyclable packaging materials in its day-to-day production. It also makes small batch orders to avoid raw material waste.

Partnering with e-commerce platform Lazada, Amante said the beauty line was able to avoid other costs like rent and high commission fees, and allowed them to set aside a bigger budget for research and development.

“Lazada is also very generous in extending help and offering extra mileages to small businesses like ours, especially when it comes to getting more exposure,” she said.

Tala By Kyla

Building the business at 18 as a one-woman team, Kyla Cañete learned how to be hands-on in every aspect of the operations of her jewelry store Tala by Kyla. She named her brand after the Filipino word “tala,” which means “star.”

Founded in May 2018, Cañete said it all started “just for fun” as she would sell chokers, hair clips, and cute trinkets back in high school.

She added that it became a dream for her to venture into a business as she was inspired by her mother, who is also a businesswoman selling bags and accessories.

Cañete also said that her mission is to help people shine and feel confident by celebrating one’s uniqueness through the jewelry pieces they offer. The young entrepreneur cited the “thought and the story behind our pieces” that sets her jewelry store apart from other businesses.

“Each collection is made with inspiration and is produced to help our customers tell their own stories. Hence, our tagline: Wear Your Story,” she said.

Cañete said Tala by Kyla, which has more than a million followers online, started with just selling the accessories to her friends and acquaintances until “I needed Lazada’s help because of the demand.”

Cañete shared that Lazada’s seller support, promotional tools, and campaigns help widen the brand’s visibility and reach.

GRWM Cosmetics

Started as the brainchild of content creator Mae Layug, who has been producing makeup content on YouTube, GRWM Cosmetics is a beauty brand that values inclusivity.

Layug said the beauty line also advocates breaking of stereotypes and embracing the beauty of every person.

“Just like our brand name, GRWM is a brand that will help you get ready in every moment, special occasions and monumental steps that you will take,” Layug said.

The content creator turned businesswoman said she has always wanted to have her own brand that “will hear its consumers and will give the best value for your money.”

Layug started her small business during the pandemic selling beauty products online through Lazada. “We decided to sell online to avoid paying rents, huge commission fees, etc.”

“Lazada helped our brand reach a network of consumers that doesn’t know GRWM Cosmetics exists through its continuous deals and other promotions,” she said.
