Philippines ranks 77th out of 132 countries in 2022 Global Knowledge Index
The Philippines placed 77th among 132 countries of a London-based nonprofit's 2022 Global Knowledge Index, which assesses a nation's expertise in terms of education, innovation, knowledge, economy, technology, and research and development.
In Knowledge 4 All Foundation (K4A)'s ranking, the Philippines got a score of 44.1 out of 100, describing it as a "moderate performer in terms of its knowledge infrastructure." The score is below the world average of 46.47.
The country's ranking dropped 21 places down compared to last year's 56th out of 123 countries, and 60th out of 138 in 2020.
Despite that, the K4A said the Philippines's areas of strength include government expenditure on primary education for the last three years, as well as the number of students attending college school regardless of age and the unemployment rate with its vocational education.
The foundation also took note of the country's number of graduates from information and communications technology (ICT) programs, as well as its high-technology trade, or its imports and exports involving computers, electronics, telecommunications, pharmacy, scientific instruments, chemistry, and armaments.
The country's areas of improvement, meanwhile, include the financing gap in its micro, small, and medium enterprises financing gap, and the citizens' exposure to natural hazard like earthquake, tsunami, flood, tropical cyclone, and drought.
K4A also looked into how the country's 15-year-old students fared in math, science, and reading, individuals with standard ICT skills, and its ICT patent applications in the categories of audio-visual technology, basic communication processes, computer technology, digital communication, IT methods for management, semiconductors, and telecommunications.
The United States topped the rankings with a score of 68.37, while Chad was at the bottom of the list with a score of 21.4.
K4A said it determined the rankings through seven sub-indices:
- pre-university education
- technical and vocational education and training
- higher education
- research development and innovation
- information and communications technology
- economy
- enabling environment

The Global Knowledge Index, K4A noted, "represents an important addition to the global repository of knowledge on development, providing updated, comprehensive, and reliable data that better enable countries and decision makers to understand and respond more clearly to the transformations and challenges related to knowledge-based development."
The report was conducted alongside the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Knowledge Foundation and the United Nations Development Programme.
