James Gunn confirms new ‘Suicide Squad’ spinoff series is in the works

Director James Gunn confirmed that a new Suicide Squad spinoff series is currently in the works.

“We’re working on something else now, another TV show that’s connected to that universe,” Gunn said in an interview during Deadline's Hero Nation podcast. “I can’t quite say.”

Sources reportedly told the media outfit that Gunn has approached HBO Max with “the idea for another series built around one of the characters in Suicide Squad.”

“We hear the project is in the embryonic stages with nothing written or greenlit but HBO Max is said to be high on it based on Gunn’s enthusiasm for the idea,” it added.

Gunn, however, did not “decisively confirm” whether Idris Elba’s Bloodsport or Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn are the characters he’s considering, Deadline said, adding that the two actors’ schedules “are too jam-packed to fit in a TV series right now.”

Meanwhile, Gunn also tried to evade Deadline’s question if former Doctor Who actor Peter Capaldi, who portrayed the role of the Thinker in The Suicide Squad, would be the one who will be featured in the spinoff series.

“I can’t say anything. It is connected to this universe, and I don’t think it will be the same genre as Peacemaker, it won’t be as much a  comedy as Peacemaker, but it will be in the same universe,” Gunn said.

Aside from the potential spinoff series based on one of the Suicide Squad characters, the director also teased the possibility of HBO Max series’ Peacemaker getting a second season, saying that “there’s a really good chance of that. We’re the biggest show in the world right now.”

“The show is doing extraordinarily well, and we’re excited, we all like doing it, we just need to cross some Ts and dot some Is, which is basically me," Gunn added.

The streaming platform, however, “had no comment” on the new Suicide Squad spinoff series and Peacemaker’s second season, according to Deadline.

As for members of the Guardians of the Galaxy, one of the the projects Gunn is currently handling, the director confirmed that the upcoming third film installment will be the end of the team led by Chris Pratt’s Peter Quill a.k.a. Starlord.

“This is the end for us, the last time people will see this team of Guardians,” Gunn told Hero Nation as he discussed the ending of the upcoming Marvel Studios film.

“It’s big; it’s so, so big and dark, and different from what people might be expecting it to be. I just want to be true to the characters, the story and give people the wrapup that they deserve for the story. That’s always a little bit scary; I’m doing my best,” he said.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is currently in production and will premiere in theaters in May 2023. The third installment in the film series will introduce British actor Will Poulter (Black Mirror: Bandersnatch, Midsommar) as Adam Warlock, which was first teased in one of the mid-credit sequences of 2017's Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2.
