Nintendo Switch Pro to use new Nvidia chip for 4K output - report

The rumored Nintendo Switch Pro will reportedly use a new Nvidia chip that will allow the console to display games in 4K resolution when connected to a TV.

As reported by Bloomberg, the upgraded version of Nintendo Switch will feature the chipmaker's Deep Learning Super Sampling (DLSS) technology "to deliver higher-fidelity graphics more efficiently." The new system-on-chip will also include improved CPU and increased memory, according to the report.

For the uninitiated, Nvidia first introduced the DLSS technology in its GeForce RTX series GPUs in 2018. The feature, exclusive to the chipmaker's graphic cards, allows games that are running in low resolution to be displayed at a higher quality.

The news outfit previously reported that the new Switch will also include a seven-inch 720p OLED screen from Samsung. The rumored new display will share the same resolution of the current Nintendo consoles at 720p but will be much larger than Switch’s 6.2-inch and Switch Lite’s 5.5-inch screen.

“The OLED panel will consume less battery, offer higher contrast and possibly faster response time when compared to the Switch’s current liquid-crystal display,” co-founder of display consultancy DSCC Yoshio Tamura said.

Since the new console will reportedly feature an upgraded chip and panel, analysts expect that the Switch Pro will be offered at a higher price point compared to the current model's $299 (P14,533) price tag. Bloomberg's analyst said that the new model could cost around $350 to $400.

Nintendo and Nvidia both declined to comment on Bloomberg's latest report. Up until now, the Japanese tech company hasn't confirmed the existence of a new Switch model. There's still no word yet on the console's release date, although the report previously mentioned that the new Nintendo Switch may arrive just in time for the holidays this year.
