'Resident Evil' origin story reboot announces cast

There’s a third new Resident Evil project in the works, and it doesn’t involve Milla Jovovich.

According to a report by Deadline, Constantin Films is covering an origin story adaptation with faithful ties to Capcom’s classic survival horror video game franchise Resident Evil.

This time, the story is set in 1998 during the fateful Raccoon City incident, the original source of the viral outbreak, and will feature some of the video game’s most popular characters.

The new Resident Evil reboot stars an all-new cast of young actors including The Maze Runner’s Kaya Scodelario as Claire Redfield, Robbie Ammell (Upload) as Claire’s older brother Chris Redfield, Avan Jogia (Zombieland: Double Tap) as cop Leon S. Kennedy, and Hannah John-Kamen (Ant-Man and the Wasp) in the role of Jill Valentine.

Tom Hopper makes a move from The Umbrella Academy to the evil Umbrella Corporation as antagonist Albert Wesker, while Neal McDonough (The 100’s Anders) will play Dr. William Birkin, one of the virologists behind the t-Virus.

Deadline reports the reboot movie will be written and directed by Johannes Roberts (47 Meters Down) who shared his excitement about going back to the roots of the video game in the new project, “With this movie, I really wanted to go back to the original first two games and re-create the terrifying visceral experience I had when I first played them whilst at the same time telling a grounded human story about a small dying American town that feels both relatable and relevant to today’s audiences.”

There’s a lot going on in Raccoon City. This reboot is the third new Resident Evil project currently in the works. A Resident Evil CGI animated series following Claire Redfield and Leon S. Kennedy called Resident Evil: Infinite Darkness is coming soon to Netflix, along with another live-action series that will follow Jade and Billie Wesker, new characters to the Resident Evil saga, who presumably have blood ties to Albert Wesker.

All three RE projects are in various stages of development.
