'I Am: Celine Dion' documentary to stream globally in June
The highly anticipated documentary of Grammy award-winning singer Celine Dion is set to stream globally starting June 25 on Prime Video.
On the singer's official Instagram page, her team gave a first glimpse of the upcoming offering that will give viewers a "raw and honest behind-the-scenes look" at her struggles with an autoimmune neurological disorder known as stiff person syndrome.
As stated in the caption, I Am: Celine Dion will serve as a "love letter to her fans" as it "highlights the music that has guided her life while also showcasing the resilience of the human spirit." It's directed by Academy Award nominee Irene Taylor.
The 55-year-old singer announced her documentary in January, saying that she's hoping to raise awareness of her health condition with it.
Celine first disclosed in December 2022 that she had been diagnosed with stiff person syndrome, which is “a rare, progressive syndrome that affects the nervous system, specifically the brain and spinal cord,” according to the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke. It causes muscle stiffness as well as spasms, normally between the ages of 30 and 60. The symptoms can remain stable in some cases, but could get progressively worse in others.
In May last year, she was forced to cancel a string of shows scheduled for 2023 and 2024, saying she was not strong enough to tour.
"This last couple of years has been such a challenge for me, the journey from discovering my condition to learning how to live with and manage it, but not to let it define me," she said in a statement. "As the road to resuming my performing career continues, I have realized how much I have missed it, of being able to see my fans."
"During this absence, I decided I wanted to document this part of my life, to try to raise awareness of this little-known condition, to help others who share this diagnosis," she continued.
