Taylor Swift breaks records at the American Music Awards 2020; full winners list

Some of the biggest names in music, including Taylor Swift, The Weeknd, and Dan + Shay took home awards at the 2020 American Music Awards aired on Sunday night. 

As reported by Variety, the 48th annual awards ceremony took place at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles with Taraji P. Henson serving as host.

This year, the AMAs had to adhere to COVID-19 protocols including staging a socially distanced red carpet, having a limited audience, and testing everyone who entered the building. 

However, the show still managed to stage multiple live performances and have in-person presenters. 

Justin Bieber and Shawn Mendes opened the show with their new single, Monster, while Bieber performed two of his hit singles, Lonely and Holy.

Katy Perry took the stage for the first time since becoming a mom by performing Only Love with Darius Rucker.

The show also featured performances from Billie Eilish, Jennifer Lopez and Maluma, The Weeknd with Kenny G, BTS, Megan Thee Stallion, Dua Lipa, Dan + Shay and more.

Doja Cat won new artist of the year, while Becky G won favorite female Latin artist – a brand new category at the AMAs.

BTS took home two trophies from the AMAs, bagging favorite social artist and favorite group. The K-pop sensation also closed the show with performances of Life Goes On and their hit Dynamite.

The top prize of the night "Artist of the Year" went to Taylor Swift, who also took home trophies for "Favorite Pop Rock Female" and "Favorite Music Video."

Swift gave a short message to fans in a clip shared on AMA’s Twitter account explaining why she was unable to accept the award in person this year.

"Thank you so much for this. This is a fan-voted award which means so much to me, you guys have been beyond wonderful all the years of my career but especially this one when we've been so far apart we haven't been able to see each other in concert," she said.

"The reason I'm not there tonight is I'm actually rerecording all of my old music in the studio where we originally recorded it. So it's been amazing and I can't wait for you to hear it," she added.

As reported by CNN, Swift’s early music catalog was recently sold. Swift, who previously held 29 AMAs, broke her own record, making her the current record holder for most American Music Awards with a staggering 32 wins under her belt. The next record-holder who comes close is Michael Jackson, who has collected 26 awards.
